We Made it Out the Group Chat!

It’s a celebration! You were recently promoted at work, celebrating a milestone birthday, or simply needing that overdue girl or guy trip to reconnect with friends. You decide to create a group chat to see who wants to travel together. Based off the people you insert into this chat, will your trip make it out?

I want to discuss some key things I see regularly. As a travel professional it really is in your best interest to listen to the advice of what tends to happen when group trips are put together. Don’t set yourself up for surprise; see the signs early.

1. It’s Your Trip-They Can Stay at Home:

The first piece of advice I give my clients is that it’s their trip. Don’t compromise what you want to do, spend, or experience because someone you invited doesn’t want to. The celebration is specific, keep it that way. You will only end up making concessions for everyone and not wanting to participate in the holiday.

2. If You Want Them There Make Concessions:

You know your friends, family, partner. You know your friend who has 3 kids probably can’t afford a babysitter for the length of the trip. Before inviting people be mindful of the details you want to put in place before clicking that “add” button to join the group. If they have to be there you may have to help monetarily or with planning for those at home who will be left behind.

3. If They Are Cheap at Home They are Cheap Away:

I really shouldn’t go into much detail about this. The person you can’t take to the restaurant because they bring up the prices of the meals. Always looking for the discount or something for free? Do not extend the invitation knowing the nickeling and dimeing will be in your future trip.

4. Choose Wisely:

When it comes to group trips there may be some that come into the group who may not be in the immediate circle. Keep the friend communication on who is invited. For ladies, you definitely need to be strategic in who attends. Don’t have your best friend’s cousin ready to fight your sister because of hear say. Do the best you can when minimizing the trip drama.

5. Common Sense Isn’t That Common:

Make sure your group has specific instructions on things they need to do to prepare for your special getaway. I know it’s 2024, but I still get asked, “Do I need to get a passport” and the destination is Jamaica. If you are unsure of things to brief your group on, utilize the travel professional to tell more about opportunities.

Again, it’s your trip. The people who are there were the ones who were supposed to be there. Keep pushing forward to get the best group trip to come out of a text message!
