If you’re a vegetarian or vegan, you know the obvious foods to avoid — there’s no confusion about where that steak came from. But the ingredients of other foods aren’t so obvious.
Food labels can be confusing or even misleading, and some foods that seem meat-free can contain hidden animal products.

Bagels and bread products

Many bread products contain an amino acid known as L-cysteine, which is used as a softening agent. L-cysteine is derived from either human hair or poultry feathers, and it can be found in many popular brand-name products. Businesses that have acknowledged they’ve used L-cysteine include Lender’s, Einstein Bros., McDonald’s and Pizza Hut.

Beer and wine

Isinglass, a gelatin-like substance collected from the bladders of freshwater fish like the sturgeon, is used in the clarification process of many beers and wines. Other agents used for the process of fining include egg white albumen, gelatin and casein. To check if a beer or wine is vegan, visit


Numerous foods contain gelatin, a protein derived from the collagen in cow or pig bones, skin and connective tissues. It’s often used as a thickening or stabilizing agent and can be found in a variety of candies, including Altoids, gummy candies and Starburst chews, among others.
Also, many red candies contain a dye made from the extracts of dried bodies of the Coccus cacti bugs. The ingredient is often listed as carmine, cochineal or carminic acid. PETA maintains a list of animal-free candy.

Caesar dressing

Most Caesar salad dressings contain anchovy paste, but there are vegetarian brands available, so be sure to read the label before you pour.


It’s fairly common knowledge that Jell-O contains gelatin, but did you know you can make vegan Jell-O by using agar-agar, a gelatinous substance made from algae?


Gelatin strikes again, but luckily you can make your own vegan marshmallows with agar-agar, so you won’t miss out on any of the gooey s’mores goodness.

Non-dairy creamer

Although it has non-dairy in its name, many such creamers contain casein, a protein derived from milk.

Omega-3 products

Many products with labels that boast their heart-healthy ingredients contain omega-3 fatty acids derived from fish. For example, Tropicana’s Hearth Healthy orange juice’s label lists tilapia, sardine and anchovy as ingredients.


Some brands of peanuts, such as Planters dry roasted peanuts, also contain gelatin because the substance helps salt and other spices adhere to the nuts.

Potato chips

Some flavored potato chips, especially those flavored with powdered cheese, can contain casein, whey or animal-derived enzymes. PETA maintains a list of vegan-friendly snacks.

Refined sugar

Sugar isn’t naturally white, so manufacturers process it using bone char, which is made from the bones of cattle. To avoid sugar filtered with bone char, purchase unrefined sugar or buy from brands that don’t use bone-char filters.

Refried beans

Many canned refried beans are made with hydrogenated lard, so check labels to ensure you’re buying vegetarian beans.

Vanilla-flavored foods

Although it’s rare, some foods are flavored with Castoreum, a beaver anal secretion. As gross at that sounds, the FDA classifies it as GRAS, or “generally recognized as safe,” and Castoreum is typically listed as “natural flavoring.” The additive is most often used in baked goods as a vanilla substitute, but it’s also been used in alcoholic beverages, puddings, ice cream, candy and chewing gum.

Worcestershire sauce

This popular sauce is made with anchovies, but vegetarian-friendly brands are available.

A Chubby Girl Struggle

Being 379 pounds is something I will forever battle with because being obese was something I struggled with my whole life . Until one day  my  mom picked me up from school early to tell me  she was taking me to a weight loss doctor . Only to discover when I went to the doctor to how much I really weighed ,That is when I decided to embark on my journey of weight loss. So I made a vow to myself and god that I would change.

Me and mom watched the show she looked at me  giggling saying ,” would you ever consider “  i said “Yes mom”  their you have it the  surgery  journey  began.


On February 28, 2014 I changed my , Mental State , eating habits  and physical activity . I  had my first cosmetic procedure liposuction  fourteen thousand  and some change , lets just say I came out of recovery bigger then I was . Nobody explained the honest repercussion  , effects , recoverytime  and how Liposuction  actually works .  Many Women are not  even candidates for liposuction . Plastic surgeon Doctors many times , do not explain to patients the  effects of the surgery . If you are not  even a candidate for liposuction then do not expect a dramatic difference after   .  to meet your goal look  you thought you could attain  with liposuction may cause for some other  surgeries .  So lets just say I had to get in the gym and try to get my goal look that way . Little did I know liposuction  takes 6 months to a year to see the full results , so overtime when you are  going to the gym you are losing twice as much weight.

Losing weight leaves you with  the effect of excess skin  . But if you had liposuction  and if  you were chunky before an now your still losing more weight   The skin is even more droopy and wrinkly .  I then began to look up ways to correct the issue the result they told me was adominialplasty , I  then had a couple more surgeries . Which lead me to being targeted by social media , friends , and family .  I then realize as time went on a lot of women  started to ask me questions about surgery and my opinion . Which lead to me to  opening up a company to help women educate them about being healthy and plastic surgery education  .   From my experiences ,training , and internships .  Some when do not have health insurance , so women can  not afford to drive to splendid areas every week for Body Spa Treatments ,. What about those women or people .

Midlife eating disorders

In June 2012 the prestigious International Journal of Eating Disorders published the results of a seminal study on the prevalence of eating disorders in midlife and beyond.

5 Signs You May Have an Eating Disorder

  1. You make yourself vomit because you feel uncomfortably full.
  2. You worry that you have lost control over how much you eat.
  3. You’ve lost more than 14 pounds in a three-month period.
  4. You believe yourself to be fat when others think you are too thin.

Lead study author Cynthia Bulik, Ph.D., director of the Center of Excellence for Eating Disorders at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, found that 13 percent of American women 50 or older experience symptoms of an eating disorder; 60 percent report that their concerns about weight and shape negatively affect their lives; and 70 percent are trying to lose weight.

Those figures mirror the rates found among teens and young women, says Bulik, author of Midlife Eating Disorders: Your Journey to Recovery.

“Eating disorders affect quality of life, and this has a tremendous impact on society,” Bulik says. “It can affect productivity at work, well-being at home, and it can have very serious economic impacts” on families, as many insurance companies are reluctant to pay for care.

Although excessive concerns about weight can appear to be little more than vanity, an eating disorder is a mental illness with close links to depression and anxiety.


Besides bulimia, eating disorders include anorexia nervosa, which causes a person to starve herself even while underweight, and binge eating disorder, which causes a person to consume large amounts of food without purging.

Patients who meet some, but not all, of the criteria for anorexia or bulimia or have other symptoms (such as forcing themselves to vomit after eating normal amounts of food, or chewing and spitting out large amounts of food) may be diagnosed with other specified feeding and eating disorder (OSFED).

A mental health condition with a physical impact

Apart from the psychiatric impact of eating disorders — sufferers often isolate themselves from friends and family — these conditions also have a serious medical impact.

Anorexia is the deadliest of all psychiatric disorders, killing up to 20 percent of chronic sufferers. Starvation, binge eating and purging all damage the heart and gastrointestinal systems. Erratic eating can cause hormone imbalances that can lead to osteoporosis. Repeated vomiting and malnutrition damage teeth, too. These problems affect eating disorder sufferers of any age, but they hit harder and faster as people get older and their bodies become less resilient.

Although no one knows exactly what causes an eating disorder, researchers believe it results from a complex interaction between our genes and our environment. Eating disorders most commonly begin during adolescence, amid the swirling hormones, physical changes and psychological adjustments of puberty.

While some patients recover in their teens and 20s, others continue to struggle into midlife and beyond. Some of those who do recover will relapse later in life. And still others will develop an eating disorder for the first time in midlife.

Coconut Water

My new favorite rehydrator is coconut water. I drink it all the time, especially when I’m home in Miami. It combines the best characteristics of enhanced water and sports drinks.

Coconut water is “isotonic,” meaning it has the same balance of electrolytes in our bodies. This makes coconut water a great natural sports drink to replace those nutrients. Unlike sports drinks, coconut water is free of dyes, artificial sweeteners, added sugar and preservatives. It is low in calories too, around 40 calories per eight ounces. Some studies have found that this tropical water is more hydrating than water!

I do not want to play down the importance of good old water, however. When I work out, I drink a few ounces of water for every 10 minutes that I exercise. After your workout, you should replace the water you’ve lost through perspiration. That’s about two cups of water for each pound of lost body weight.

If you can make the commitment to start drinking more water, you’ll definitely notice a change in the way you feel, in the energy you have and the mental kick that sufficient water gives.

Bottled Water vs. Tap Water

I usually drink bottled water, rather than water from the tap, because it fits my needs and my lifestyle. But the quality of tap water has improved, and on the whole, Americans have good clean drinking water. You can get information about your community’s water supply by logging on to the Local Drinking Water Information Web page at the Environmental Protection Agency. Filtering out contaminants from tap water with a home water filter is another good option for making sure your drinking water is safe.

The best choice for staying hydrated boils down to your taste preferences and how many calories you can afford to ingest, based on your activity level. If you have trouble guzzling plain water, drink a low-calorie flavored version instead. As for working out and competing, coconut water and sports drinks can fulfill your post-workout requirements.

The bottom line is to drink up and stay hydrated. Your body will love you for it.
