In life, we often find ourselves in seasons of waiting—waiting for a job, a relationship, a breakthrough, or a promise to be fulfilled. These times can be filled with a profound sense of expectation. But what happens when the wait feels endless, and hope begins to wane? This journey through expectation can often be lonely and heart-wrenching, yet it is in this very space that our faith is both tested and strengthened.
Understanding Expectation
Expectation, by definition, is a strong belief that something will happen or be the case in the future. It is a hopeful anticipation, a longing for a future reality that has yet to be realized. In the Bible, expectation often goes hand in hand with faith, for it is faith that undergirds our hope and sustains us during the waiting period.
The Loneliness of Waiting
One of the most poignant examples of waiting in the Bible is found in the life of Abraham. In Genesis 12:2-3, God promises Abraham that he will become the father of a great nation: “And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing.” Yet, years passed, and the promise seemed increasingly unlikely. The wait was long, and Abraham and Sarah, his wife, experienced profound loneliness and heartache.
In Genesis 15:2-3, we see Abraham’s anguish: “And Abram said, Lord God, what wilt thou give me, seeing I go childless, and the steward of my house is this Eliezer of Damascus? And Abram said, Behold, to me thou hast given no seed: and, lo, one born in my house is mine heir.” Abraham’s cry reveals the emptiness he felt in his waiting, the deep longing and the fear that the promise would never come to pass.
The Heartache of Expectation
The psalmist captures the heart-wrenching nature of expectation in Psalm 42:5: “Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted in me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him for the help of his countenance.” Here, the psalmist expresses a soul in turmoil, a heart heavy with unmet expectations, yet clinging to hope in God.
Similarly, in Proverbs 13:12, we read, “Hope deferred maketh the heart sick: but when the desire cometh, it is a tree of life.” This verse succinctly captures the dual reality of expectation—the sickness of heart when hope is delayed, and the overwhelming joy when it is finally fulfilled.
The Promise of Fulfillment
Despite the loneliness and heartache, the Bible assures us that waiting is not in vain. Isaiah 40:31 offers a powerful promise: “But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.” This verse encourages us that strength and endurance come from waiting on the Lord, and ultimately, He will fulfill His promises.
In Hebrews 6:15, we see the fulfillment of Abraham’s wait: “And so, after he had patiently endured, he obtained the promise.” Abraham’s story is a testament to the faithfulness of God. Though the wait was long and filled with trials, the promise was eventually fulfilled. Demonstrating that God’s timing is perfect, even when it feels like an eternity to us.
Conclusion
The emptiness of expectation can be a challenging journey, filled with loneliness and heartache. Yet, the Bible teaches us that this season is also a time of growth and strengthening of faith. As we hold onto God’s promises and continue to wait, we can find solace in the assurance that He is faithful. One day, in His perfect timing, our expectations will be met, and our hearts will be filled with joy. Until then, let us draw strength from His Word and trust that He is working all things for our good.
In the words of Romans 8:25, “But if we hope for that we see not, then do we with patience wait for it.” Let us wait with patience, for our hope in the Lord is never in vain.
