Atlanta physician and founder of Doctor in the Family shares her journey from survival to wholeness
Dr. Sherika Newman is a board-certified physician known across Atlanta and beyond for her compassionate, family-style care. She brings this approach to her practice, Doctor in the Family. She announces the release of her debut memoir, Heal Thyself: From Childhood Trauma to Triumph.
For years, Dr. Newman has been the doctor patients call family — the one who sits down, stays longer, and tells the truth with warmth. In Heal Thyself, she turns that same care toward her own story for the first time.
The Memoir
The memoir traces her path from a childhood marked by poverty and abuse, through teenage motherhood, and medical school. It covers multiple marriages and the demands of building a career and a practice — to the harder work of learning to heal herself. Through ten deeply personal chapters, each opening with a story from her own medical practice, Dr. Newman writes with the same clarity she brings to her patients. She explores faith, resilience, identity, and the long road to becoming whole.
My Why
“I’m sharing my story because I want people reading this to know that trauma does not have to dictate your future,” says Dr. Newman. “I’m a Black girl from Pompano Beach who survived things no child should survive, became a teen mother, and still became a doctor. If I could find my way to wholeness, so can you.”
She credits much of her healing to the people who refused to let her give up. “There were seasons where I wanted to quit,” she says. “It was my community that pulled me back — my own family, my therapist, my closest friends who are family in every way that matters. I write about them by name in this book because I owe them everything.”
Heal Thyself will be available on Amazon beginning July 5th. Dr. Newman will celebrate the release with a public signing at Station 11 in Atlanta, GA, on Sunday, July 19th at 4:00 PM EST.
