MLK Jr. Beloved Community Awards

Last night, I had the incredible opportunity to attend the 2025 MLK, Jr. Beloved Community Awards at The King Center in Atlanta. The evening was nothing short of inspiring, as it was filled with Black and Brown excellence united under one roof to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Beloved Community Yolanda D. King Higher Ground Award

One of the highlights of the night was meeting the legendary Jenifer Lewis, who received the Beloved Community Yolanda D. King Higher Ground Award for her contributions as an actress, singer, author, and activist. Her energy was infectious, and her impact undeniable.

I also had the pleasure of chatting with Trina Braxton, the November 2024 cover feature of Head2Toe Magazine and the red-carpet host for the event. Her warmth and charisma added a special touch to the night.

The awards ceremony, a marquee program of The King Center’s annual holiday experiences, celebrated individuals and organizations making transformative strides in leadership, social justice, and building a better world—what Dr. King envisioned as the “Beloved Community.”

From the vibrant pre-reception with live entertainment and delicious hors-d’œuvres to the moving performances by MaKenzie Thomas and CommUNITY ATL, every detail of the evening was beautifully curated.

The honorees were a testament to the power of collective action and individual brilliance:

Black Voters Matter, represented by Co-Founders LaTosha Brown and Cliff Albright, received the Beloved Community Civic Leadership Award.

PSYONIC was honored for its innovative technological contributions.

Morris Brown College, accepted by Dr. Kevin E. James, was celebrated with the Christine King Farris Legacy of Service in Education Award.

The Beloved Community Social Justice Award was presented to the AIDS Healthcare Foundation.

Other notable recipients included Nobel Peace Laureate Nadia Murad, youth scientist Heman Bekele, and Serenbe, recognized for environmental justice efforts.

The event reinforced the importance of continuing Dr. King’s legacy through leadership, activism, and a commitment to justice. It was an honor to witness history being made and to celebrate these change-makers.

This night reminded me of the profound impact of working together toward a common goal of equity and unity—a true reflection of the Beloved Community.
