On Wednesday March 27, 2024-I had the honor to attend the National Black Arts Festival (NBAF) at the Atlanta History Center honoring hat designer James Keith and visual artist Marilyn Nance. Attendees also had the privilege to preview the new spring collections supplied by Neiman Marcus.

Attendees had a delightful evening filled with dinner, drinks, a meticulously curated fashion show, award presentations honoring fashion icons and artists, and the introduction of the winning student designers of the annual Fashion Forward Student Design Competition.

Honorees

James Keith, a renowned designer recognized for his iconic red bottom hats, has made a significant impact on the fashion world with his distinctive style. The recipient of the 2024 Fine Art + Fashion Visual Arts award is photographer Marilyn Nance. She has been honored as the first recipient of the Radcliffe Bailey Award for Excellence in Visual Art. Supported by Vicki and John Palmer, a distinguished committee of Visual Arts judges, headed by Lauren Tate Baeza, the Fred and Rita Richman Curator of African Art at the High Museum, has chosen the awardee.

Fine Art + Fashion Collaboration with Neiman Marcus

Fine Art + Fashion, in partnership with Neiman Marcus, unites art and fashion enthusiasts with acclaimed artists in visual arts and fashion design. NBAF and Neiman Marcus co-host this exclusive event aimed at highlighting the most promising and established fashion designers and visual artists. The event supports NBAF’s in-school arts education initiatives for youth in Atlanta Public Schools and the Fashion Forward Student Design Program, which aims to enhance the education of African American students pursuing a degree in fashion design.

NBAF History and Mission

NBAF operates as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, dedicated to the exposure, education, engagement, and entertainment of audiences through the presentation and support of African-descended art and artists.

The organization upholds its commitment to perpetuating a tradition of exceptional artistic and educational initiatives spanning music, dance, film, theatre, visual arts, and literature.

The NBAF was established in 1987 by the Fulton County Arts Council in Atlanta, Georgia, under the direction of the Fulton County Board of Commissioners, following a study commissioned in 1986 by Michael Lomax, who was then the Chairman of the Fulton County Board of Commissioners. The inaugural NBAF festival took place in 1988.
